Haiti Child Care became a ministry of the Free Methodist Church in Haiti in 1966 and has brought tangible assistance to the children in our churches in the areas of Christian education, health and nutrition. Child sponsorship is a ministry partnership that transforms lives, inspires hope and brings children and their families to faith in Jesus Christ.
Education – Statistics show that approximately 85% of the population lives below the poverty line and 48% of Haitians are illiterate. While children have access to primary education, most cannot afford it. Based on Christian principles, Haiti Child Care helps children reach their potential by providing them an education that will empower them to make a difference in their lives, in their communities and in their nation. Currently, Haiti Child Care has 54 schools under sponsorship with a sponsorship enrollment of almost 10,000 children. Another ministry of Haiti Child Care is our teacher training initiative. National and North American educators provide seminars that inspire ideas and offer new teaching methods for our primary school teachers.
Health – Haiti Child Care recognizes the health problems of the Haitian people and the limited resources they have to respond to their health needs. The high burden of poverty and unemployment continues to isolate them from seeking necessary medical care. Haiti Child Care offers medical assistance and healthcare services to the children who are sponsored under the Free Methodist child sponsorship program.
Nutrition – Hunger interferes with learning and hinders academic achievement. In Haiti, many children go to school with nothing on their stomachs. Because Haiti Child Care recognizes that proper nutrition is necessary for learning and healthy development, we endeavor to feed daily all of the children in all of our sponsored schools as funds are available. Contributions to the HAITI FOOD FUND help us provide food for all of the children in our sponsorship schools, not just those children who are sponsored.
Hope is essential for Haiti’s future and Haiti Child Care continues to be the instrument that inspires hope to thousands of children and their families. Only the Lord knows what effect your love and compassion will have on these children, their families and their communities. Mark 10:16 says, “And Jesus took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.” Embrace these children. Be the hands of Christ and bless these children through the gift of child sponsorship.
